About
John Harris was once a fit, fast full-on father of four girls.
Some of his achievements include:
- > Twice winner of the Wild Trek. (2hr Ski, 2.5hr Run, 2.5hr Bike, 2hr Canoe)
- > Canoed around the South West Coast of Tasmania. (14 days)
- > Marathons, winter treks, bike rides, canoe races – nothing could stop him.
At the age of forty-four, following a horrific bicycle accident, John was pole-axed by a massive stroke. It left him totally paralysed down the right side of his body. He was unable to speak, barely able to move, and struggled to think clearly. Press him and he will disarmingly confess that nothing much had changed! To him, the loss of speech, movement, and job, was a challenge impossible to resist. He practically changed his whole life with guts and determination. One thing that didn’t change was his unique sense of humor.
The ‘new event’ in his life was to recover from this life threatening illness and claw his way back to finally achieve a striking resemblance to his former self. His recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. John’s comeback was due to mental strength, hard work in rehabilitation, physiotherapy, speech therapy and the long hours spent in the gym.
As John talks he paints an exhilarating picture of what is possible. His message is enthusiastically crafted, compelling and outcome driven. He provides the audience with thoughtful choices for the future and leaves them ready to embrace the challenge of change.
He is frequently described as a born entertainer with his amusing, articulate and incisive comments. His heart wrenching stories simply never miss a beat. John loves to intrigue, amuse, inform and delivers his talks with high-energy and passion. But behind his humour lies the story of how he went to the brink and came back.
John Harris is the ‘Stroke Genius’
